Title: Gyrotropic Phontonic Crystals And Their Applications In Microwave Technology

Technology: By proper spatial arrangement of magnetic and dielectric components, one can construct a magnetic photonic crystal with strong spectral asymmetry (nonreciprocity). The spatial asymmetry, in turn, results in a number of interesting phenomena, in particular, one-way transparency when the magnetic photonic crystal, being perfectly transparant for a Bloch wave of frequency omega, "freezes" the radiation of the same frequency omega propagating in the opposite direction. The design can be used as an independent microwave, millimeter, or submillimeter element, as well as in conjunction with other elements, such as planar antenna arrays. The attractive features of these devices utilizing this design are substantially smaller weight and dimensions, multifold enhancement in power capabilities, tunability, and excellent survivability in harsh environments.
