Title: Fabrication Method for Polymer Thin Films
UC Case No: 2002-249-2-ott
Categories: Chemical: Processes
Technology: University researchers have developed a method that allows for the synthesis of a wide variety of polymer thin films, the fabrication method of which can be combined with photolithography to create surface patterns. Thin film thickness is controlled from 1 nm to the submicron range. The method also supports the creation of "smart surfaces". It is applicable to most of the vinyl monomers, and block copolymers can be produced as well.
Application: Utility includes biochips, coatings on biomedical devices for improving biocompatibility, and coatings on surfaces for anti-fouling and anti-corrosion. The major advantage of the University's system over the current state of the art is that it is much more densely packed, self-regulating (sensing), and fully recyclable as a product.
